I tackled a leaky sink the other day. I’d been tolerating the drip for months. It took me so long because I didn’t know how to go about starting. I’d made halfhearted attempts to ask at various hardware stores but I didn’t provide enough information for them to help me so they were useless. I took this to mean that they were rotten sob’s and vowed never to shop there again.

I don’t know what changed to make the task suddenly seem doable and essential. It was almost like catching a wave of energy. All I know is that I woke up one morning ready to fix the leak.

So I turned to the wonderful internet– the source of all knowledge, and searched on “How to fix a leaky faucet.” I got exactly what I needed and thus my philosophical adventure began. Here’s what I learned:

1. The source of the problem is generally not where it appears to be.
Did you know that when a faucet is leaking the leak isn’t coming from the faucet but from the handles? It makes perfect sense. It’s where the work is done. I would have started trying to apply a solution to the symptom instead of getting to the heart of the matter. Learn something new every day.

2. Even when at first it looks as though you can’t go any further you have to keep at something to find resolution.
I only partially understood my internet instructions, and it’s not my style to comprehend something fully before I start messing with it, so I started unscrewing whatever looked unscrewable without any idea what a packing nut, valve stem, or stem spindle was. I got to a point without obvious moving parts and figured okay this is it. That thing there might be a washer. Let’s go with that. First trip to the hardware store.

3. There is no shame in ignorance when you’re trying something new, and you will not die of embarrassment when you make a mistake.
I have to admit I was tempted to scramble for a lie when the guy asked me what I thought this item was. It was so clear from his expression that I’d made an error. It was not in fact a washer but some spacer thing. He showed me examples of what I was really looking for. I got back in my car, took deep breaths, thought it was unlikely that they were having a big laugh at my expense but what the hell. I was doing my best. I presciently told myself that maybe I’d make several more trips back and forth (25 minutes each way) before it was done and that was fine.

4. It’s not the thing itself, but what supports it that’s important.
So next I figured out how to take out the cartridges and took them back to the store. After a fair amount of blah blah blah that I didn’t understand or care about regarding Chinese parts and their American equivalents he picked the seat and spring he felt was most likely to fit. Another mind blower– the leak has nothing to do with this thing I just dug out, it’s what it sits on! I’d hardly even looked at what was beneath it. Back I go to see if this replacement part is the right thing.

5. Pay attention to what you’re receiving. You may be taking on something inadvertently.
Lo and behold the seat and spring fit perfectly. Hooray. I’m ready to put everything back together. I reach into my pocket for the cartridges and find that I have accidentally taken one from the store and left mine behind. I try to make it fit but it’s no use. One more trip and this time it was avoidable. Arggh.

6. Life would be easier if the hardware store was closer.
Achieving a goal may involve some false starts and missteps. Staying on your intended path generally takes a lot of course correction. The sooner you know you’re headed in the wrong direction the less frustration, inconvenience and discontent in your life.

My sink no longer leaks. I feel joy and a sense of accomplishment every time I walk in the room. I hope that lasts at least as long as the leak itself.

This is
usually coupled with a very basic misinterpretation of how plumbing works,

couldn’t be more farther from the truth. Just as it is in any other field in

As we are hotel consultants, we
sincerely believe that a consultant must be the most honest, transparent,
straight-forward and therefore most trustworthy person close to the owners and
investors.

A consultant’s intention should
NEVER be to keep hotel owners and investors ‘in the dark’!  A true consultant must educate advice and
provide samples of good and bad practices.  A hotel consultant must also be a good teacher
– not a lecturer!  We must guide and use
all channels of communication to pass on knowledge to others.  We choose to write articles in a hope that it
helps and inspires others. 

 

Mistake No
1 – Vision and Mission.

 

Honestly, it is hard to
understand that so many hotels and resorts open their doors without a proper written
vision and mission statement.  OR, the
vision and mission is most of the times not clear at all, or only clear in the
mind of the owners.  On top of that, nobody
communicates the vision and mission to managers and employees.  How the employees will know what is expected
and understand the ‘big picture’?  As
mentioned in one of our earlier articles, this silly mistake ensures that the
business ends up following the habits of senior managers and owners and not the
organizational vision and mission.

 

Mistake No 2 – Sales
and Marketing? – No need now!

 

“I have many friends and they
are well connected.  I and my relatives
are well known people who are VIP.  We
will all ensure that we will have many guests using the hotel and our
facilities!”

 

Yes, don’t be shocked! – The
above sayings are what I did hear from several hotel owners.  Those VIP hotel guests did come, yes, but they
never paid their bills as they almost always expected to be invited since they
are good friend of the owners.  The result
of non-existing Sales and Marketing is very costly.

 

Mistake No
3 – Hiring of Departmental Managers.

 

Surprisingly, some new hotels
and resorts do hire their Hotel Manager and Department Head Team just weeks
before the opening and strongly believe that this will be fine.  After all, they are manager, expensive and
should be able to get it right in a few days…… some owners think!

 

To my knowledge and from my
experience, this is mostly done to save some hotel pre-opening costs as the needed
money has been already lost during the construction process because of bad
planning and ongoing adjustments to drawings and the building.

 

At one occasion I have seen
that the whole management team for a 150 room hotel here in Thailand to be hired
just 2 weeks before the opening.  The
owner kindly fired the team after 2 months as in his opinion, the team
was not able to implement proper systems and service standards fast enough.  Some of the best
employees did resign as well, as the pressure working without a proper
pre-opening was too much.  I say it
again, if you don’t work professionally, your most capable employees will leave
you first!

 

Mistake No
4 – Purchasing.

 

The purchasing process for
equipment, utensils and amenities is all done by the owner without any hotel manager
and departmental manager comments, input and specifications.  Once the manager and departmental leaders
joined the hotel for the opening, there was no budget left for any additional
purchases, as most of what owners choose are to serve their own preference and
style, but not functional or practical to the workers and guest use.  So, the hotel or resort did end up with
equipment and utensils which are not always usable, have wrong specifications, over-specs
or under-specs.

Again, the owners or senior
managers never stopped wondering why professional people left the company and
why the quality of products and service are not up to any standard!

 

Mistake No 5 – Employee
Restaurant and Facilities

 

Strangely, employees, employee facilities and welfare
seem to be the least and least important thing on owners and developers minds.
I know one hotel where the owner had even meetings with the employees, right after
the opening, lecturing them how good the hotel will be, explaining how
professional and generous the owners are as they did buy only the best
qualities and products for the guests.

 

He said he is not stingy and use only the best and most
comfortable furniture, amenities, cars, etc.  The owner also asked staff to work harder and
be more committed to have a good hotel forgetting that all employees worked 2
months without a day off!   The employees listen and wondered what he is
talking about while sitting on a dusty concrete floor inside a badly ventilated
and non-air conditioned concrete shell of room, eating from a Styrofoam food
box with plastic cutlery and without any proper uniforms and only one rest-room
for 100 employees.  I am sure I don’t have
to write down here what those employees did think and even say to each other
about this owner after the meeting was over.

 

Mistake No 6 – Training

 

So far I found only 3 independent hotel owners and
investors who actually provided proper facilities and time to have proper staff
orientations and training for employees before opening the business.

Although EVERY single hotel developer said in the
beginning that they fully agree and fully understand that training is very important
and that they fully understand that people need to be trained before opening
the hotel, the fact is that only the true professional
owners did what they say. 

 

Most of the time, employees did not go through any

the managers and owners complain the staff directly that they know nothing
about the hotel, that they don’t follow hotel systems, that they don’t provide
good service etc.

 

Mistake No 7 – Human
Resource

 

In my humble opinion, any hotel
that opening / running their property without a proper HR person, HR manual and
HR systems are operationally committing suicide!!!   

 

I have seen businesses where the majority of staff has
been hired without having a written employee benefit list, written rules and
regulations, written basic systems etc.  Employees
have been verbally promised different benefits by different managers etc. The
result was simply a disaster!

And then, once the management
started to implement some standardized benefits for each level of employees and
some standard rules and regulations, the Human Resource nightmares become did
become reality as many employees complained that they only joined this
particular hotel because of benefits verbally promised by managers. Not
everyone promised the same…..

 

 

Mistake No 8 – Back of
the House Design

 

Seldom is this area given good attention.  In most cases, back-of –house areas have been
assigned based on vacant areas. I wonder so much why proper storage, proper
offices with strategic locations, proper restrooms,
proper walkways etc. are almost never important to developers and owners.   It is
hard, and sometimes almost impossible to explain how the hospitality industry could
make money from providing a good and smooth service and for this, within a
rough back-of-house workflow.   It is not only the waiter and the front office
staff who provide a service!  EVERYONE in
the hotel provides a service and ALL Departments and employees work somehow
inter-connected.

9 – Back of the House areas

Many coaches have complete confidence in their coaching abilities, yet they still are unable to see themselves as experts. They say “there are others who have been doing this longer and are probably better than I am.” And they are baffled with the fact that they talk to a lot of people, giving lots of one-on-ones and still struggle to get people to sign up.

Carrying doubt and not claiming your expertise shows up in how you present yourself to your clients. If you’re not bought in, they won’t buy in either.

You ARE an expert. Right now, as you read this article, you are already an expert.

Your training, reading, doing, as well as your own experience, makes you an expert. You know what your clients are facing and have a way for them to overcome those challenges that they perhaps never will without your help.

By claiming yourself as an expert, you are setting yourself apart. You will display more confidence in yourself and your process. As you believe it, so will others. They will start seeing you as THE expert to come to when facing the particular challenges you offer solutions for.

As this happens, you will naturally create a higher visibility and attract those high paying clients looking for a solution they believe in.

How do you know if you are dealing with an SEO expert? What are their credentials? How do you discern between the expert and the expert fake? 

Could there be another industry more inflated by ego, misinformation, and repetition than search engine optimization? Perhaps there are a few others out there, but not many. But what else can one expect from an unregulated industry? There’s no FCC, FTC, FEC, FMC, FERC, HIPAA, ATF, SEC, FAA or any other acronymed agency standardizing legitimate SEO practices. 

Search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask Jeeves each have their own secret algorithms which mathematically select, arrange, and prioritize search results. No two search engines work the same. No two search engines yield exactly the same search results (unless they are actually powered by the same search engine but packaged under different names). No SEO “expert” or firm knows all of the search engines’ secrets. So how do they write so many articles, blogs, and forums with such authority? And why are the ones pinky swearing that they’re honest only telling you enough to maintain enough mystery to keep you relying upon their expertise and yet still wondering what the heck they are doing behind those closed doors?  

Am I saying that they’re all scam artists? No. Many of them aren’t. But even the ones who are legit are still count on an air of mystery and difficulty to keep the client from demanding too many specific answers. Why? Because if these search engine specialists revealed all that they know to a client, they know that an intelligent client would be unimpressed. The truth is that most companies could perform their own SEO and be quite successful. There are exceptions, like the home mortgage industry. Certain industries are so competitive in organic search that most companies will not be able to compete even with professional natural SEO services.  

So why should a company hire an SEO professional? In my opinion, such contracting of services only makes sense when a company either has enough money to throw around or they have much more important tasks for their own employees to perform. I compare it to online grocery shopping – it saves you time and effort, but unless you’re disabled, filthy rich, or ungodly busy it is not a cost effective option.  

Of course, I’m not going to begrudge anyone the opportunity to sub out a service they do not feel comfortable with performing themselves. Every executive has the right to decide which is more valuable to the company in this situation: time or money. I understand that, and I also respect a person who focuses on contributing their strengths rather than faking strengths that eventually cost the company due to incompetence and pride.

You will find those same types of people in the search engine marketing profession. Men and women have forged careers in search engine marketing because they learned how to retell someone else’s stories and to write “new” articles containing recycled information. Those types are actually better at sales and personal PR than SEO.  

So what exactly makes a person an SEO expert? Seriously. Don’t accept someone’s claims without critically examining them. There’s no federal or industry-wide standard. So who makes an expert an expert? What’s the difference between an expert and an expert fake? And how can you tell one from the other? 

It’s a slippery slope. Sadly, it is an industry where many companies profit from client ignorance. Am I going to present clear-cut evidence here of my claims? Not a chance. I don’t have to, and I don’t want to make any specific enemies. I learned what I know by studying SEO online wherever I could because I was trying to join the industry. What I realized through my extensive online reading and professional relationships is that a good humble businessperson is always more trustworthy and reliable than a self-proclaimed expert. Humility is key. Use your discernment.

See for yourself if you don’t read the same thing over and over, only presented in a different order or from a different angle. Study which groups or individuals support and compliment each other in SEO articles, forums, and blogs. Notice how they build a castle of thoughts out of thin air. In this industry, some will corroborate each other if it means reinforcing the fuzzy logic that has benefited their own business. The lack of fresh information is fairly convincing evidence that search engine optimization and keyword research are not all that complicated. If they were, the experts wouldn’t have to recycle to put out new articles and blogs. 

For all of you still willing and ready to hire an SEO professional, all I ask is that you make an educated decision based on research. And always check with clients the firm claims to have serviced. Find out if they were really a client, what type of service they received, and if they were satisfied with that service. And, of course, make sure you aren’t verifying one firm with one of their bread-and-butter partners. Remember, things are not always what they appear. If you keep these basic considerations in mind, you should do well when choosing the right SEO professional.
